The birthing of the Michelin Man

Friday 12 March

Another morning. It seems we are slowly working our way into Mexican life. We seem to stay up later than normal and then make the most of the lack of commitments and sleep in to catch up on the very broken night sleeps!

Martin is looking like a different person this morning!! I think the second bag of food has done something to him. His feet are still swollen and now his hand is as well. I think he will end up looking like the Michelin Man! I don’t care as long as it puts some weight onto him and gives him some fight!!

He has good colour in his face as we head to breakfast. I am encouraged that a few of our new found friends have also noticed it!! He eats a little, but not a lot. I am not too surprised after 12 hours of vein feast!!

We take a walk together. Another positive that he is feeling a little stronger! I show him my new found treasure chest – the supermarket! We walk through together not really needing to buy anything, just needing to escape from the hospital. As we walk back I pick a few flowers and place them in my hair. I am out of my tracksuit, have flowers in my hair – I am me! The weather is beautiful. Something has changed – I can feel us turning a corner – it is a very wide slow bend – but we are turning it nonetheless! I wish it was a U-Turn, but I am happy with the direction regardless!

Martin has more treatments. I have more classes to attend. This one was on companion guidelines. Advice on how to be the best helpers we can! I am surprised that most of the things on the list I am doing – some I could be doing better, but for now I think I am doing pretty good. The only thing that I need to change is doing too much for him! It is hard because it helps me to cope if I am busy trying to help him!

We head out for our afternoon walk. We have decided that we will do this on a daily basis. Starbucks is calling our name! Hot tea is waiting!! Words cannot express how nice it is to drink hot tea! I forget that Americans are not tea drinkers... no wonder they all look at me strange when I say I need a cup of tea! As I sit in Starbucks observing the locals, I notice that most Mexican girls have very latin booty – very curvy bottoms. I am now pondering if perhaps my father was not part Aboriginal after all, but part Mexican. Most of the men here look like him and most of the women have unfortunate butts like mine!

Tonight is movie and popcorn night. We are beginning to make a nice little group of friends! Now that Martin is beginning to feel stronger he is beginning to get a clearer head which makes it easier to socialise. The movie was old – ‘What About Bob’, but it was a nice little escape!!
As we come back to the room Martin notices that the catheter they have placed in his stomach for draining is leaking a little bit. I notice that whatever they are giving him for his tummy is doing something! I have not heard him blow tunes like that (farting) for so many months!! I never thought the day would come where I am excited to hear him fart so much!! The nurse comes in – I am sure there must be a thick dense cloud and aroma as she walks into the room – so much gas has to produce something! They drain his tummy – only 900ml but it has taken the leaking away.

Overall the day has been better. Martin looks better than he has in weeks. I feel myself beginning to settle. It is the end of the first week of treatment. The weekend is ‘treatment free’ and allows patients to be as touristy as they can be.

One week down – one to go. Let’s hope the second week brings even more dramatic results than the first
